Q&A: What does the US Military think of Sgt. Joshua Tabor (he water-boarded and beat his 4 year old daughter)?
Question by pragmatism_rules: What does the US Military think of Sgt. Joshua Tabor (he water-boarded and beat his 4 year old daughter)?

This story is getting world wide attention. I first read about it in overseas newspapers in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. Basically, US Army Sgt. Joshua Tabor “water-boarded” (he has admitted to this) his own four year old daughter because she could not say the alphabet. “Cops said Army Sgt. Joshua Tabor, 27…admitted to punishing his daughter by holding her down on the kitchen counter in suburban Washington State and repeatedly pushing her head backward into a full sink. “He explained she’s deathly afraid of water,” said Todd Stancil, police chief in Yelm, Wash.”
And it gets even better! The police chief said, “He did it all the time. To him, that was an acceptable form of punishment – because she wasn’t able to say the alphabet.” He also said, “”She had just multiple bruises all over her body, from the ears to the legs,” Stancil said. “She said, ‘Daddy did this.’”
So this man has beaten his child from top to bottom and he only gets charged with third degree assault, given $ 10,000 bail, and restricted to his army base. Is this a special concession to our fine military? Do they get special treatment? I am pretty damned sure that a civilian father who “water-boarded” his own daughter would be given say $ 500,000 or higher bail and he would still be sitting in jail instead of having freedom in his own neighborhood (base).
And just how did Tabor get custody of his child? Until two months ago, she has been living with her mother’s parents who had raised her. But he managed to wrest custody from them (do we have fathers’ rights groups to thank here?) and then stopped his daughter from communicating with them entirely. And what did he do with his daughter over those two months? He beat her black and blue….and waterboarded her?
My questions are: why did he get such a low bail? Why is he still on such a low bail and not in custody when he ADMITTED to waterboarding his own daughter? Where is the military statement on domestic violence? How did he get custody and why wasn’t he properly evaluated before getting custody? Will the grandparents get custody again or will they “do family therapy” and reunite this creep with his kid so he can do it all over again? For my curiosity, does anyone know who the judge was who gave Tabor custody? Was “Father’s Rights” involved in Tabor getting custody? And where is their statement repudiating his actions? And finally, what is the appropriate punishment for a man who “water-boards” his own child…a four year old little girl?
Thank you!
I am not trying to smear the military and I have the highest respect for our soldiers, sailors, marines, air force, etc. BUT this case has received world wide attention and I firmly believe that the military should have made a statement expressing regret. If they have and I have missed it, I would hope that someone points it out to me.
And at the same time, this man was overseas and obviously affected by what he has seen. So should soldiers who have been deployed receive special screening before receiving custody to protect their children?

You have never been in a US court. $ 500,000 for a child abuse offense? Not in this country. The vast majority of child abuse cases never even see the inside of a court. “Special concession?” Again, you obviously have no idea what goes on in court. Manslaughter will get somebody half a million in bail. Most domestic offenders are released with restraining orders.
I agree with you that he is disgusting, but your odd ideas about criminal justice and what constitutes high bail are really off base.
The military will defer prosecution first to the civil authorities. Then UCMJ will kick in, and he will probably receive a court martial and jail time in a CCF, after doing his civil jail time, should the trial prove he is guilty.
This question seems more aimed to smeer Soldiers in general with your framing. Perhaps posting this in the legal threads would have been more appropriate. Instead it seems as though you are trying to infer the all military people think “water-boarding” is acceptable. Why do you care if there is a statement against his actions from the military? Will that take back what has happened?
The answer is no. You should already know that this kind of action is looked down upon by the military legal system, yet that doesn’t seem to be your point, does it?
As one who has been “waterboarded”…..what you described is NOT waterboarding….. not even close to waterboarding….
What he did was child abuse…. and he is a disgusting slimeball….. but there was NO waterboarding involved here
EDIT A statement that the military has regrets would imply that the military is some how culpable………
You assume that military service is some how responsible when there is NO PROOF there is any connection ….. If he had not been in the military….. like a lot of these dirtbags are not….. who do you blame it on then? Maybe if he work at a car sales lot the manager should have checked him out and issued an apology…..
You may “support the military” but your willingness to believe the military some how created this monster betrays your willingness to believe the worst about MILLIONS of servicemen who served and lived honorably
How can ONE criminal be contaminated by the military but MILLIONS were not
No one taught him to abuse children….he brought that with him from civilian life…. maybe his high school princpal should apologize
you sound happy over this in the same sick way that a militant feminist would…
anyway theres several holes in your assumptions/knowledge:
first off, yes its wrong. granted compared to what hadjis do to their kids (like throwing boiling water or oil on them) this isnt that bad. but yes its still wrong. thast not waterboarding btw, thats “dunking” kids do that to each other all th etime, so that action in and of itself is far from malicious.
bail is set on his risk to run. we dont get paid that much in the military in the first place, and he is locked down on base. a free bail would be just as effective.
this is far from a concession. he is in the military and therefore when it come to confinement the military has responsability. he’s probably diong every shitty detail on earth right now, its like hard labor just before he actually goes to court.
third degree assault is the proper charge, since that is the charge for inflicting bodily harm to a minor. so yes he is “only” getting the proper charge under the law…should we charge him with something he isnt guilty of?
how did he get custody? he’s her DAD, they’re her GRANDPARENTS. he hadnt abused her before. someones IMMEDIATE family member always gets custody over extended family. it has nothing to do with “fathers rights groups” so get get ur head out of ur uterus.
the military takes domestic violence very seriously, but they need to wait for him to get charged in the civilian courts since its a civilian offense, then they can double tap him with UCMJ. its not the military’s place to make news statements over one of its members fucking off when he is off duty. if he mowed down a bunch of little kids in iraq: yes. but he was on his own free time here, and not representing the military.
Unfortunatley, “father’s rights” groups have led to the abuse of many children.
$ 10,000 is FAR too low for this sort of crime. He should be in jail for life for what he did, with no parol!
This is just one more example about why we can’t trust the law to decide who should get custody of a child.
Thanks to father’s rights groups, my sister is STILL jumping through hoops to get her kids back because her drug-using, drunkard, abusive ex-husband made false claims about her so that he could get custody of the kids simply for the extra food stamps.
Thanks to father’s rights groups, my step-daughter and her step-sister were traumatized for life because my husband’s ex-wife let a child molester, my step-daughter’s step-sister’s father, into their lives, and their is evidence that he molested his own daughter, but she won’t come forth and say anything out of fear of getting her daddy in trouble. And the bastard was released on his own recognizence. Why? Because he admitted it!
That’s what happens when a person admits to doing something wrong. They get released on their own recognizence, with ample opportunity to commit the crime all over again.
Damn straight the military should have come forth with a statement. Joshua Tabor needs to be stripped of his rank, given a dishonourable discharge, and locked away for LIFE, and so does anyone else who abuses a child!
If the grandparents do not get custody again IMMEDIATELY, and instead are forced to do “family therapy” and that family therapy leads to Tabor getting his daughter back, then there has been a great injustice done towards that little girl.

Well for one,the Military,as a whole thinks of him as a criminal, and a child abuser.Bail is set according to flight risk, and seriousness of the crime.Where is he going to run to if he’s stuck on base, and in the eyes of the law this is a child abuse case, there isnt a “water boarding” law,its child abuse, this is average bail considering this is child abuse.Just because you admitted something doesnt mean they can just throw together a trial and sentence him in a days time.He will be out on bail, till trial. What you also have to look at is,he will be subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ).He will lose his job,get dishonorably discharged, lose retirement, and then whatever his sentence is.Personally i think they should beat him and waterboard him, just to prove a point
